1 upset in Linz, 2 injuries in Osaka

One quarterfinal in Osaka today wound up with a retirement, and the other was a walkover. Marion Bartoli retired at 4-6, 0-2 against Sania Mirza because of a right shoulder injury, and Melinda Czink's right foot injury caused her to give Francesca Schiavone the walkover.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki defeated 6th seed Aleksandra Wozniak (why do they keep playing each other?!) 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, and 3rd seed Samantha Stosur defeated Jill Craybas, 6-1, 6-3.

In Linz, the top three seeds--Flavia Pennetta, Agnieszka Radwanska and Yanina Wickmayer--won their quarterfinal matches, and 4th seed Carla Suarez Navarro was upset by Petra Kvitova, 7-5, 6-4.

It seems that Wozniacki was sick (virus) in Tokyo, going out in the second rd and not recovered for Beijing going out in the 1st round. She was upset that the tour did not postpone her Beijing match another day. It is too bad that she has not been able to consolidate her final at the USO by winning a big tournament.

I meant to tie in my first comment with the Osaka tournament. Although Wozniacki made it to the semis, I think she should have not played this soon before Doha. You are right, Diane, why do Wozniacki and Wozniak keep playing each other. My husband has been learning about the WTA and can't keep them straight.

Wozniacki needs to take a rest. And I agree she probably shouldn't have played this soon before Doha.
